Sebbene fosse diffuso fino alla metà dell'Ottocento, ha rischiato l'estinzione, ma è stato recuperato grazie a un progetto negli anni '80. Caratterizzato da vigoria media-elevata e maturazione tardiva, presenta foglie medio-grandi e grappoli piramidali di dimensioni medie. Gli acini hanno una buccia sottile di colore blu. Il vino ha un intenso colore rosso rubino e offre profumi complessi di fragoline di bosco, ciliegie e spezie. In bocca è caldo e strutturato, con una freschezza acida. Si abbina bene a piatti di carne e formaggi stagionati.
