The historic Ferro China Bisleri is back on the market. Original recipe produced by the Caffo distillery
Ferro-china was considered an invigorating tonic with digestive properties and an excellent blood supplement. It was consumed as a liqueur and aperitif. Furthermore, mothers of the time beat the egg and mixed it with ferro-china to help their children grow.
In 1894 Ernesto Baliva, a doctor in Rome's hospitals, developed his own recipe for ferro-china and began to supply Roman pharmacies. The recommendation was one teaspoon a day, as was done for a tonic, to be administered even to children. In fact, it was believed that iron diluted in alcohol was easily metabolised by the body. The combination with cinchona bark was also considered a cure for malaria. That of ferro-china remained a trendy category until the end of the seventies, then it slowly disappeared. Its typical bottle is made of dark glass to protect the contents from light, similar to what happens for the conservation of pharmaceutical products.
