Marchesi Frescobaldi Mormoreto Toscana IGT 2017

Mormoreto 2017 ToscanaIGT Walking among the rows of Cabernet and Petit Verdot, my thoughts always turn to 150 years ago, when my ancestors first planted these varieties with the desire to produce a great wine. Since 1983, thanks to the commitment of my uncle Leonardo, this desire has come true with the Cru Mormoreto, a wine with a vibrant, profound and harmonious character. Since 2013 a small amount of Sangiovese has further emphasized its elegance.

Climate trend

The winter of 2017 was mild and dry. In spring the early budding gave way to an early season for the vine. During the spring, the arrival of sporadic rains re-established the water needs of the vineyards, ensuring good flowering, albeit earlier than in previous seasons. The 2017 harvest began at the end of August, at the end of a hot and dry summer which allowed us to harvest well-ripe grapes that were qualitatively rich in polyphenols and colour.

Tasting notes

Mormoreto 2017 expresses a personality as warm, enveloping and impenetrable as the season from which it comes. At the sight it is intense ruby red and clear at the same time, concentrated and with a beautiful consistency. The sense of smell is pervaded by fruity notes of blackberry, blueberry and raspberry accompanied by a beautiful freshness. The balsamic and mentholated scents balance well with bergamot and jasmine. The spiciness doesn't take long to arrive, with notes reminiscent of clove and vanilla. The tertiary sector is surprisingly integrated: tobacco, cocoa powder and coffee bean. Soft on the palate but still supported by a beautiful freshness, with round and silky tannins. The finish is long and persistent

Vinification and maturation

The grapes from the Mormoreto vineyard were harvested manually in 15 kg boxes. After an initial sorting of the bunches in the vineyard, these were further selected upon their arrival in the cellar. This attention to detail has guaranteed the highest possible quality. The 2017 harvest produced very concentrated grapes; To optimize the aromatic and polyphenol extraction, fermentation and maceration were carried out delicately, at controlled, low temperatures and with a reduced number of pumping overs. The malolactic fermentation was early and occurred immediately after racking. At the end of the year Mormoreto began its refinement process in French oak barriques, where it remained for the next two years, deriving maximum benefit from the natural micro-oxygenation provided by the oak. After bottling, the subsequent months of aging allowed Mormoreto to balance itself, expressing its elegance and potential to the fullest.
