RHUM A.H. RIISE NON PLUS ULTRA VERY RARE (70CL, 42.0% Vol.)

This rum is A.H.'s "top of the range" product. Riise. Its name refers to the writing "Non Plus Ultra" engraved on the Pillars of Hercules which, in mythology, were built near the Strait of Gibraltar and marked the limit of the known world.

The pillars bore the inscription "Non Plus Ultra" in Latin, meaning "nothing beyond." This reference illustrates the fact that Very Rare is the best of the range and that there is no rum in A.H.'s house. Riise get over it. It is the highest quality and the oldest.

A.H. Riise Non Plus Ultra is hand-blended by the master distiller, who personally selects the barrels that will be used to make the blend.

On the nose it is very fragrant, like exotic pepper berries and ginger seeds. Cinnamon adds to this sophisticated candy impression. It is also vegetal and sometimes even floral. The fruit is represented by a rather acidic red plum, balanced by a creamy side, all reminiscent of a clafouti where some cherries would also have fallen. We then arrive at something darker, more roasted.

Aeration will dissipate the burnt and roasted side to replace it with a little solvent that will retreat on the cinnamon definitely present at all levels. The orange peels blur the idea of candy that one had at the beginning. Even if we stick to something rather sweet, this expression seems to stand out from the rest of the range. The Christmas gingerbread look is still there, so don't worry if you're a brand enthusiast.

The attack is soft, a little vinous, a little rancid. The sensation is warm and oily with aromas of chocolate, orange and vanilla. The oak is liquorice, covered in molasses where quite rich and complex spices would be taken.

The finish is sweet, reminiscent of a liqueur or sweet wine.
